Go to http://www.avast.com and download the Home version.

It is free, and works very well. They offer it for free to home users because they make their profits selling the Pro and Server versions to companies. But the free home version works fine and you'll never have to buy anything. You will occasionally have to re-register as the free license will expire, but it doesn't cost anything.

It is a great program and frankly I wouldn't bother buying one, this one does the lot. If you need a firewall too try zone alarms free at

Both of these products can be upgraded (you have to pay for this if you want it) but I've used them for a long time and they are really good programs just using the freeware.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
